Understanding how to target contacts is key to a successful Hustle campaign. But there are a few ways admins can accidentally miss targeting their contacts which can lead to a large amount of confusion for users.
The articles provide an overview of common ways contacts can be missed when setting up the targeting of a goal.

What is silent targeting?
Silent targeting is an issue that can come up where Hustle isn't able to find any Contacts with the variables in your scripts or targeting filters set so no messages can be sent out.
What ends up happening is instead of targeting a number of Contacts to text, the goal targets zero contacts.
How does silent targeting happen?
Adding a non-existent variable
While creating scripts, admins can use variables to autofill data into the script from a CSV or their contact's profiles.
If an admin adds a custom variable that gets typed into the script (like <NAME) instead of using a pre-existing variable, the goal can run into issues with silent targeting because contacts have a field for <Contact Name> but, not for <NAME>.
Use the Variables drawer at the bottom of the script editor to make sure variables get added with no issue; typing the variable out can cause the script to break.
No Custom Field data for contacts
When Custom Fields get used in any scripts, only contacts with data for the Custom Field get targeted.
If Contacts don't have data filled in for the Custom Field on their contact profile, they won't be included in the targeting of the goal.
Note: There are 2 different color Vairbales in Hustle. Blue Fields mean the variable is already built into Hustle (e.g. Contacts Name, Agent Name, etc.). Purple variables are Custom Fields that admins have created for the Hustle organization.
Targeting by tag
When targeting by tag(s) keep the following in mind:
- To include only contacts that have a specific combination of tags, use the Have all of these tags filter.
- To include contacts that have any of the selected tags, use the Have any of these tags filter.
- To suppress contacts with the selected tags, use the Does NOT have any of these tags filter.
How do you check the targeting of a goal?
While setting up the targeting of a goal, admins will see the number of contacts who are being targeted.
If the number turns red and reads “0”, the goal is not targeting ant contacts.
You can see the details of which contacts are getting targeted by using the search filters available on the Contacts tab.
