How do I set up Action Network with Hustle?
Before setting up the integration, admins need to find the API key for their Action Network group. Action Network uses groups as its organizational units.
To find your group's API key in Action Network:
- From the Details dropdown, go to the API & Sync page.
- Select your group.
- Click Your API Key on the left.
Once you have the API key, to set up an integration in Hustle:
- From the Admin Panel, click Integrations.
- Click Add Integration under Action Network.
- Click Add Integration on the following page. The Add Action Network Group window opens:
- Enter the preferred display name of the integration in Integration Name (this can be edited later).
- Paste your group's API key in the Action Network API Key field and click Save.
Hustle checks that the API key belongs to the Action Network group you are connecting. If the key does not match, you will see an error message. See Frequently asked questions.
Note: Each Hustle organization can only be integrated with one Action Network group.
How do I update an integration in Hustle?
In the admin panel > Integrations, admins can click the integration options (...) to update the following for an Action Network integration:
- Integration Name
- API key
If the data flow to Action Network isn't working as expected, or if your API key has been revoked in Action Network, you may need to update the integration's API key.
Before updating the integration, admins need to get the current API key for their group from Action Network (see section above).
To update an integration:
- From the Admin Panel, click Integrations, then select Action Network.
- Click integration options (...) next to the integration name.
- Click Update API Key.
- Paste the API key in Action Network API Key and click Update.
- To rename an integration, click integration options (...) and click Edit Name.
Note: If several Hustle organizations connect to the same Action Network group and the API key is revoked, you need to update the API key in every one of those Hustle organizations.
How do I import contacts into Hustle with Action Network?
Admins can import Action Network reports into Hustle via CSV file exports from Action Network. Unique Id’s from Action Network must be mapped to the Hustle integration during the field mapping step. Admins can then use the integration to sync data back to Action Network based on activity in Hustle.
- Export your desired Action Network report as a CSV file.
Note: Unique Action Network ID’s are not included in the export by default, so admins will need to make sure the ID’s are added to the export before importing to Hustle.
- In Hustle, go to Contacts > Add contacts > Choose a CSV file. Choose the CSV file that was exported from Action Network.
- Map the required fields to each column in the CSV file:
- Phone Number
- First Name
- Last Name
- Action Network Unique ID (map this to the Action Network integration in Hustle) Important note: unless this field is mapped, contacts will not be integrated with Action Network.
- Optional: Choose how your contacts will be assigned.
- Optional: Apply tags to every contact in the import.
- Click Import Contacts.
- Look for Action Network ID’s on contacts to confirm they are now integrated with Action Network.
Note: Hustle can automatically match some fields based on name, but the Action Network ID will need to be manually mapped to the Hustle integration. If this field is not mapped, contacts will not be integrated with Action Network.
How do messages in Hustle group goals sync to Action Network?
After an Action Network group is fully integrated and contacts have been imported from Action Network to a Hustle group, Hustle updates your Action Network group as goal activity happens in Hustle groups.
Note: Action Network currently only integrates with goals launched in Hustle groups. Broadcast and Dialer goal integration is coming soon!
Here is the data Hustle group goals send to Action Network for integrated contacts:
- Hustle group goal is launched > Two tags are created in Action Network, called ‘Contacted’ and ‘Responded’ with the Hustle goal name and date appended.
- Contacted: a message was sent to the contact.
- Responded: a message was received from the contact.
Note: Tag creation happens for every goal in an organization that is connected to Action Network, whether or not contacts in the group are integrated with Action Network.
Tag names include the goal name and the date the goal was launched, and end in Contacted or Responded. Characters in the goal name that Action Network doesn't accept are converted to underscores. For example, a goal named "October: GOTV" launched on 10/1/2026 creates these tags:
ZZ_Hustle_Group_Goal_October_GOTV_2026-10-01_Contacted
ZZ_Hustle_Group_Goal_October_GOTV_2026-10-01_Responded
Note: Hustle goals with duplicative names launched on the same day will create tags with ‘2,3…etc.’ appended to the names in Action Network, for example, if another Hustle goal was launched on 10/1/2026 named "October GOTV" Action Network tags would be named as follows:
ZZ_Hustle_Group_Goal_October_GOTV_2026-10-01_2_Contacted
ZZ_Hustle_Group_Goal_October_GOTV_2026-10-01_2_Responded
Note: Editing a goal name in Hustle does not update the tags that were created in Action Network.
How do opt outs sync to Action Network?
Opt outs sync one way, from Hustle to Action Network. When a contact opts out in Hustle, Action Network creates a custom field called Hustle Opt Out with the value “true” on that activist’s record.
Things to Note: The custom field is only created in Action Network when the value is true. For contacts not opted out in Hustle, the Hustle Opt Out custom field will not exist in Action Network. However if a Hustle opt out is reversed (support request only), please note this opt in will not sync to Action Network. Opt outs performed in Action Network do not sync to Hustle.

What Hustle data syncs to Action Network?
After a Hustle organization has been integrated with an Action Network group, the following will sync from Hustle to Action Network:
- Contact opted out in Hustle > Action Network custom field created on contact record Hustle Opt Out = ‘true’
- Goal launched in Hustle group > Action Network tags ‘Contacted’ and ‘Responded’ created
- Message sent to integrated contact in Hustle group goal > ‘Contacted’ tag applied to contact in Action Network
- Message received from integrated contact in Hustle group goal > ‘Responded’ tag applied to contact in Action Network
Note: The integration is not retroactive, so only actions made after an integration is set up in Hustle would sync to Action Network.
Do broadcast and dialer goals sync to Action Network?
Not yet - coming soon! Currently only goals launched in groups will sync data to Action Network. For Action Network-integrated contacts only* Opt outs will sync from Hustle to Action Network regardless of where they are applied in Hustle.
*Only contacts imported to Hustle with Action Network ID’s will sync opt outs from Hustle to Action Network.
What does the "couldn't access Action Network" error message mean?
Hustle couldn't connect to Action Network with the API key you entered. Make sure you are using your group's API key from the API & Sync page, then try again.
What happens to my Action Network tags if I rename a goal in Hustle?
Nothing. Editing a goal name in Hustle does not update the matching tags in Action Network. Keep in mind this could result in a mismatch between a goal name in Hustle and tags names in Action Network. Editing a tag name in Action Network will also have no effect on the associated goal name in Hustle. Hustle sync-back will still update activists with the tag(s) associated with a goal.
What happens if I create goals with the same name on the same day?
Hustle appends a number to the end of the tag name so each goal keeps its own unique pair of tags.
For example, if I create two goals with the same name on the same day, the following tags will be created for the first goal:
- ZZ_Hustle_Group_Goal_Action_Network_Test_2026-10-09_Contacted
- ZZ_Hustle_Group_Goal_Action_Network_Test_2026-10-09_Responded
The tags for the second goal would look like the following:
- ZZ_Hustle_Group_Goal_Action_Network_Test_2026-10-09_2_Contacted
- ZZ_Hustle_Group_Goal_Action_Network_Test_2026-10-09_2_Responded
Can I connect more than one Hustle organization to Action Network?
Each Hustle organization can only be integrated with one Action Network group. One Action Network group can be integrated with more than one Hustle organization. If an API key is revoked in Action Network, admins will need to update the API key in every Hustle organization that uses it. A revoked API key that has not been updated will interrupt the data flow of an Action Network integration in that organization. See How do I update an integration in Hustle?
Why do I see Action Network tags created for goals in groups that are not integrated with Action network?
When a Hustle organization has an Action Network integration set up, two tags will be created in Action Network for every goal launched in groups in that organization, regardless of whether contacts have been imported from Action Network. Tags will only be applied in Action Network to integrated contacts (where the Action Network ID is visible on the contact record in the Hustle group).
